Doubling the future…

Heading into the 2019/2020 Academic Year, SIBS Chiangmai has successfully made the transition to becoming an authorized Cambridge International School, and has received approval by the Thailand Ministry of Education (M.O.E.) to operate as an International School after a rigorous application process. We are now working diligently to solidify our foundation and structure to ensure our students successfully perform to this international standard.

In 2020, we will be running our first official Cambridge Checkpoint Tests for our Year 9 students and our first International General Certificate in Secondary English (IGCSE) Examinations for those students studying Year 2 of the IGCSE curriculum. Checkpoint Tests subjects include English, English as a Second Language, Math, and Science and will take place in April 2020. The IGCSE Examinations are from late April until early June 2020 in the subjects in which your children are enrolled.

“Double the Future” is not merely a marketing slogan. It holds the tenets of our core belief that our unified bilingual curriculum provides your children global opportunities for academic studies and pursuing their chosen career paths, either in Thailand or overseas. This is done by offering students a bilingual education that satisfies the requirement of the Thai M.O.E. English Program (EP) curriculum, together with the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) program.

Attaining literacy in English, as well as a child’s native language, is crucial to the success of our program. SIBS recognizes that English language is the vehicle for learning and is necessary for learners to access the content of the lesson and communicate their ideas. As educators, it is our responsibility to make sure that language is not a barrier to learning.

SIBS educators understand the possible challenges that language presents to learning. Teachers understand why students face these difficulties and what they can do to support students. A whole school approach on English Language Awareness and its consistency across the curriculum is being implemented through in-depth mentoring, coaching, and monitoring of teachers and their teaching and learning practices for this school year.

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most significant decisions you will make. At SBS, we believe that one thing that makes us different is the time we dedicate to the needs of each student - Our flexible curriculum, small class sizes, and student-centred teaching methods used allow our teachers to ensure that each student is learning at a pace that is comfortable for them and matches their learning style. In order to meet our school-wide English Language Across the Curriculum Policy, teachers are expected to adopt the following, across the curriculum:

  1. Encourage Students to Use Complete Sentences and Standard English.
  2. Model Literacy Skills (Talk/Model/Write).
  3. Encourage Students to Proofread and Edit Work.
  4. Incorporation of the Collins Writing Program.

There is an old African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child.”

The effort does not stop within the school gates. It extends to the entire community of SIBS parents, guardians, and families. Our children need everyone’s support to gain experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment.
